چکیده

4 We investigate the relationship between bleaching induced coral reef degradation and the economies of the U.N. defined small island developing states (SIDS) using panel econometric techniques. We analyze the relationship between this degradation and GDP as a whole, as well as the reef specific activities of tourism and fishing, and find evidence of directionality in these relationships. Specifically we find that overall economic growth is significantly correlated with reef degradation in the SIDS, that tourists are insensitive to reef degradation as a tourism pull and that a bi-directional relationship exists between reef health and SIDS fisheries. Our results indicate that the tourism economies in the SIDS as measured by arrivals have been robust to reef degradation but that this activity is partly responsible for the decline in reef health associated with economic growth in the SIDS. The bi-directional relationship between fish catch and bleaching induced reef degradation also suggests the existence of possible feedbacks between tourism growth, fish catch and the health of the reef. Our findings highlight the striking need for better management of coral reef ecosystems to sustainably maintain the ecosystem services that they provide.

Short Term Growth Rate of Acropora downingi in the Coral Reef of Hengam Island, the Persian Gulf

In the Persian Gulf, Acropora- dominated coral reefs have been damaged by global and local disturbances. Inversion of coral colonies mostly occur due to anchoring and fishing in many coral reefs, particularly those established nearby human societies, like the coral reef of Hengam Island, in the Persian Gulf. The short term growth rates (weight increment) of inversely and normally transplanted c...

Molecular diversity of Symbiodinium spp. within six coral species in Larak Island, the Persian Gulf

Reef-building coral harbor communities of photosynthetic taxa of the genus Symbiodinium (zooxanthellae). The genus Symbiodinium is currently classified into nine genetic clades (A–I). Various corals harbor different Symbiodinium clades; some show specificity to a single strain. Coral and their zooxanthellae are sensitive to environmental stresses. In the Persian Gulf, coral reefs are subject to...

Effect of sea surface temperature (SST) changes on coral ecosystems in Kish Island

Background and Theoretical Foundations: Coral reefs are one of the world's most attractive ecosystems. They have been covering large parts of the world in the tropic areas. Coral reefs in the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf are largely limited to the Islands. Many factors, including natural and anthropogenic activities cause stress to the reef communities affecting reef development. Coral bl...

بررسی اثر پارامترهای فیزیکی ‌و ‌شیمیایی آب در پراکنش آبسنگ‌های مرجانی جزیره کیش

The present study sought to determine the interactions between coral reefs and physicochemical properties of water (depth, temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, chlorophyll a, and water current velocity) and seabed type and slope in Kish Island, Iran. The study area was divided into 19 zones (eight zones with and 11 without corals). Physicochemical properties of water for each...
